Supmicro Endorses Symbios Logic I20 Products
Symbios Logic I20-Ready Ultra SCSI Host Adapters Used in SUPERMICRO Motherboards

San Jose, Calif. (July 1, 1997) - SUPERMICRO Computer today endorsed the Symbios Logic Inc. I2O-ready Ultra SCSI host adapters and I2O-ready SCSI hardware device module (HDM) software. SUPERMICRO is using Symbios Logic I2O products for its SUPER P6DNH and P6DNH2 I2O-ready motherboards, the first I2O-ready server solutions to ship in volume production. Symbios Logic single and dual PCI to SCSI host adapters are also available from SUPERMICRO as part of its Super Server Solutions.

"I2O will provide a major benefit to the entire computing industry. SUPERMICRO is committed to establishing I2O as the industry standard specification for high performance I/O systems," said Charles Liang, President and CEO of SUPERMICRO. "Symbios Logic provides us with the I2O technology that we need for our SUPER P6DNH and P6DNH2 I2O Server Solutions."

The I2O specification implemented on the P6DNH and P6DNH2 offers an open, standards-based architecture that serves as a framework for the rapid development of a new generation of portable, intelligent I/O solutions. I2O provides increased system performance, more robust systems, increased flexibility, faster access to new I/O technology, and increased fault tolerance.

SUPER P6DNH was recently used by Intel CEO Andy Grove in his IT tour in Europe to demonstrate the capabilities of the then-emerging I2O technology. Based on Intel's new i960 RP and RD I/O processor, the dual Pentium Pro P6DNH and P6DNH2 set a new standard of performance for server systems. The intelligent i960 RP/RD I/O subsystem offloads interrupt handling, relieving the host CPU and enhancing system performance.

The PCI-SCSI host adapters from Symbios Logic allow OEMs in the workstation, server and RAID markets to integrate I2O architecture quickly without additional R&D investment, and to meet the exceptional data transfer speeds required by high-performance client, server, and storage systems. The cards are extensions of the complete, industry standard PCI-SCSI I2O-ready solutions offered by Symbios Logic and offer the benefits and advantages of the scalability, adaptability and performance of the I2O technology.

Currently available from SUPERMICRO in its Super Server Solutions are the Symbios SYM875SPUW single channel 40 MB/s and the SYM876DPUW 80 MB/s (combined) dual channel SCSI host bus adapters. Both Fast-20 SCSI adapters support 3.3 V and 5 V PCI interfaces and are full 32-bit PCI bus mastering. They have an on-board 4 KB static RAM and Flash ROM for the SCSI BIOS. With the capability of over 100 MB/s burst data transfers, they have zero wait state PCI transfers and accomodate up to 512 byte PCI bursts.
