Supermicro Selects QLogic Enclosure Management Controller for One of the World's Fastest Quad Pentium® III Xeon® Servers
QLogic GEM354 Monitors and Controls Environment in SuperServer 8050

ALISO VIEJO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 27, 2000 - QLogic Corp. (NASDAQ:QLGC - news), the leader in enclosure management solutions with over 90 percent market share, announced today that its GEM354 enclosure management chip is now shipping in Supermicro's SuperServer 8050, one of the fastest quad Pentium® III Xeon(TM) servers on the market today.

Featuring 16GB of SDRAM system memory, 931MB/sec PCI I/O bandwidth and Ultra160 SCSI support, the Supermicro SuperServer 8050 delivers the performance and speed demanded by today's e-business world as well as a combination of advanced technology and pricing.

"We designed the GEM354 with customers like Supermicro in mind," said David Race, vice president and general manager of QLogic's Enclosure Management Products group. "The flexible architecture of the GEM354 allows customers to define the number of device slots, power supplies, fans, temperature sensors, door locks, and other components in the system using the menu-driven GEM configuration utility. No additional software or firmware development is required which means reduced implementation costs and increased system reliability and manageability for our OEMs."

Designed for both Fibre Channel and SCSI environments, the QLogic GEM354 Enclosure Management controller monitors and controls the physical environment within server and storage enclosure environments. The GEM354 detects the presence or absence of functional disk drives, power supplies and fans, and monitors the temperature within the enclosure.

"QLogic has become a de-facto standard in the enclosure management industry through consistent innovation," said Charles Liang, president of Supermicro. "The GEM354 is the most powerful SCA SCSI backplane security and management controller available and it's flexible, single-chip design allowed us to accomplish cost-effective, seamless integration into the SuperServer 8050."

QLogic's single-chip enclosure management solutions may be implemented independently or combined to create a complete system and chassis management solution. With support for SCSI Accessed Fault Tolerant Enclosures (SAF-TE) and SCSI Enclosure Services Command Set (SES), they may be integrated with systems implementing the Intelligent Platform Management Interface (IPMI). GEM products are also used as simple ``hot swap'' controllers in server backplanes or as full-featured chassis management controllers in storage subsystems.
