Supermicro scale-out storage R-Series are a series of storage clusters designed and optimized for Red Hat Storage, a powerful, open software-defined storage solution (GlusterFS). Built with enterprise class hardware, Supermicro scale-out storage platform delivers unified file and object storage with high performance, high scalability and high availability. Supermicro scale-out storage platform is ideal for a broad range of applications such as Cloud, virtualization, content distribution, data archiving, Big Data analytics and Hadoop application. Supermicro scale-out storage platform is a fully integrated solution that includes all hardware components from server to networking, cabinet and power distribution unit. It is fully tested and certified by Redhat Storage.

Supermicro scale-out storage R-Series is a reference architecture proven by extensive lab testing as well as production deployments. Supermciro worked closely with software partners to define and validate the most optimized hardware configuration with real application workloads. It takes the guess work out of designing and deploying a truly scalable storage solution that meets the most demanding enterprise IT and data center environments. Supermicro resellers and channel partners can take advantage of the reference design and deploy large scale storage for the customers very efficiently.

    • SAS2 6Gb/s and 10GbE Networking: Built-in with industry leading LSI SAS2 RAID controller and Intel 82599ES based 10G connectivity for optimized I/O performance

    • Enterprise server platform with the best power and cooling efficiency: Redundant power and cooling, Platinum Level (up to 95+%) power efficiency

    • Intel DP Xeon performance: Utilizes the latest Intel® Xeon® dual processor technology with Hyper-Threading, Dynamic Turbo-boost and enhanced memory, and PCI-E 3.0 bandwidth.

    • Global namespace: Aggregate disk, CPU, I/O, and memory from multiple servers into a single pool of resources with flexible back-end disk options

    • Elastic, Scale out with ease: Storage volumes are abstracted from hardware and can be added to or removed from the storage pool while data continues to be available, with no application interruption. Volumes can grow or shrink across machines and can be migrated within the system to rebalance capacity or add/remove systems on-the-fly.

    • No metadata server, eliminating performance bottlenecks: Locates files algorithmically using an elastic hash algorithm. Ensures no central point of failure; improves performance and provides linear scalability.

    • Unified file and object access, multi-protocol support: Supports FUSE-based native client access to GlusterFS volumes for performance. Supports CIFS and NFS protocols for standards-based access. Supports unified access to objects as files through NFS, CIFS, and files on GlusterFS volumes as objects with the OpenStack Swift API.

    • High availability with replication: Provides active-active mirroring within a data center, active-passive mirroring over WANS and supports automatic self-healing

    • Predictable performance across a variety of workloads: Performs across a wide variety of workloads, and enables customers to economically achieve high performance levels. Achieves the optimal balance among performance, cost, manageability, and availability. Uses write behind, asynchronous I/O, intelligent I/O scheduling, and aggregates operations to predict performance.

    • HDFS compatibility: Provides stronger protection against failure of data and name-nodes in a Hadoop deployment. Benefits large and long-running data processing via combination of GlusterFS's high-availability and fault-tolerance.

    The Supermicro Scale-Out Storage Platform is fully tested and certified by Red Hat. Red Hat Storage (RHS) is a software-only, open source scale-out solution, designed to meet unstructured, semi-structure, and big data storage requirements. Red Hat Storage based on GlusterFS technology is a distributed file system built on top of XFS as its local file system. GlusterFS takes a layered approach to the file system, where features are added / removed as per the requirement. This modular architecture allows users to create multiple volumes with different characteristics like distribute/replicate with differing performance requirements.
