In multi-disk systems device, naming may not be as intuitive as expected. In these circumstances, is there a quick and easy way to toggle the Locate LED in order to locate and confirm physical disk locations.
The Linux tool, ledctl, is a good way to toggle the Locate LED (if supported) for locating and confirming physical disk locations. ledctl has been verified by its creator for Intel storage controllers (i.e., AHCI, SAS). Supermicro has informally tested the locate and locate_off commands on LSI 2308 and 3008 HBA controllers.
The Supermicro Locate LED protocol is typically a blinking red LED, not be confused with a solid red LED which denotes a failed disk.
Example:
1. yum install ledctl
2. sudo ledctl locate=/dev/sda,/dev/sdb
Note: root privileges are required to use ledctl.
Note: the locate command will toggle the Locate LED protocol on (typically a blinking LED).
3. sudo ledctl locate_off=/dev/sda,/dev/sdb
Note: the locate_off command will toggle the Locate LED protocol off.
