Does IPMI card (SMC-001) automatically recognize the motherboard it's in?

Possibly not, unless you update the firmware with respect to the board that it's in. When we ship out the BMC card, it does not contain any firmware because we do not know which board you would use it on. You must update the firmware either from the CD or from our ftp site.
