Can I use a pre-installed HDD from a different system on my new system?

If and only if the old system is exactly the same as the new one, it might be ok to do so. Since these two systems are probably not the same, you may get blue screen with error "inaccessible boot device." Both boards must have same chipset, BIOS, CPU, memeory, etc; in order for OS to run. What you can do is rebuild the pre-installed OS from installation CD.
