I understand that different speed SCSI drives can be connected to a SCSI adapter and all will work since the adapter is backward compatible with slower drives, will this slow down all drives?

SCSI adapters can run slower drives without issue and this does not necessarily mean faster drives on the same SCSI chain will run slower. If all the drives are LVD on the same SCSI chain then each drive can communicate with the SCSI adapter at native speed since they all use the same protocol and the SCSI adapter is an intelligent device. The only issue which will slow down all drives is if an Ultrawide single end SCSI (SE) drive is connected to the same SCSI chain which has LVD drives. The reason is the only common protocol to all the drives is SE which is Ultrawide and limited to 40MB/sec per spec.
