Question
We have an issue with the 6Gps expanders in your SC847E16-RJBOD1 chassis. Both expanders in the chassis have the same WWN of 50030480:0000007f. Because WWN of the two expanders are identical, the RAID controller’s firmware is unable to differentiate them. Could you please help in coming up with a solution to the problem.
Answer
Here is how to change the WWN numbers for both the front & the rear backplanes. Please note that, a LSI-based MegaRAID controller must be used to flash the WWN number.

1. Please find the WWN (SAS) addresses on the backplanes. They shall look like "5003048000xxxxxx." Write both WWN numbers down for later use.

2. Make sure the PRI_MODE1 & the PRI_MODE2 jumpers are set to pin 2 & 3 positions. All the 4-pin Molex connectors on the backplane are connected.

3. Connect an internal HBA to the primary SAS port on the backplane that needs to flash the WWN with the iPass cable.

4. Download the SAS2 version of Supermicro ExpanderXtools Lite LSI expander utility from https://www.supermicro.com/wdl/utility/ExpanderXtools_Lite/. Following the user manual to install and start the utility.

5. From the menu bar, select COM, and then select In Band from the pull-down menu. The expander information should show up in the Expanders dialog box.

6. From the menu bar, select WWN, and then select WWN from the pull-down menu.

7. Highlight the target expander by clicking on it in the Expanders window of the WWN dialog box. Enter the corresponding SAS number from step 1 into Enter New SAS Address text box, then click Update WWN button.

8. Wait until the WWN updates completes, and the Download Successful message appears in the window.

9. Perform steps 7 & 8 again on the second expander in the chassis.

10. Do the A/C power cycle on the chassis to reset both expander backplanes.
