We have the Supermicro 2U Twins servers with Mellanox ConnectX-2 chips inside. I am using the firmware v2.7.2. I want to use SR-IOV with the Infiniband HCA on this system. I'm having hard time enabling SR-IOV on the Mellanox HCA. I read from Mellanox website that ConnectX-2 does support SR-IOV. I figured out that the "SR_IOV" is missing from the PCI capability printed for this card.
Do I need to upgrade firmware on this HCA, and if so, where do I get it ... from SuperMicro or Mellanox?
You have to use the firmware from Supermicro. The firmware 2.9.1000 does support SR-IOV. However, the SR-IOV capability is disabled by default, and needs to be enabled. However, according to Mellanox, the capability is still in beta, and the bigger problem would probably be a suitable driver for the host OS. You also need a suitable BIOS to support it. Unfortunately, this special BIOS is not available yet.
To answer your question, yes, you'll need to upgrade the firmware and the BIOS. Unfortunately, the firmware v2.9.0100 itself didn't pass the validation in our Lab. We are still working with Mellanox for the new firmware release.
