During the attempt to install VMware ESX 4.0 on the X8ST3-F motherboard with 3520 CPU, it just hung. If I use 5506 CPU, then I can finish the installation and the system boots up fine. Is this a CPU-related issue?

Yes, so far we only certify 5500 series CPU for VMware ESX 4.0.
