I would like to ask again about SAS drives on SATA hot swap trays. The Super Server: 5017C-MTF has SATA based controller on board right. But I will use SATA hard drive to SAS based RAID controller. So the question would be more if backplane in server chassis would support adding these SAS drives to the hot swappable SATA disk drive trays?
The backplane can support SAS or SATA hard drive, the hard drive trays can mount with SAS or SATA hard drives and insert into backplane. If you have SAS controller then is support and run with SAS or SATA hard drive. But if you have SATA controller then it only support with SATA hard drive NOT backward with SAS hard drive. So the 5017C-MTF server which is pre-built with on-board SATA controller can not support with SAS hard drive.
