We experienced twice, when the RAID status was "Degraded," the status changed to "Rebuild" after rebooting a few times (with maybe 1 hour of idle desktop in the middle). Is this what happens? I mean besides manually starting rebuild using the Intel RAID utility, is this a legitimate work around? If I keep the server running for an hour, then reboot, will the "Degraded" RAID starts "Rebuild"ing it self?
Yes, you are correct. You do not need the Intel Storage Manager to get degraded RAID volumes to start rebuilding. It should rebuild itself automatically. If it does not, then there are a couple methods to start the rebuilding. Rebooting the server after a short period should get the RAID to start rebuilding. If you are in proximity to the server, you can also unplug the "failed" drive in the RAID, and then plug it back in shortly after. This should start the rebuild process. However this is a low-cost solution, it may take a while to start the rebuilding. We use the storage utility to force it.
In that case, you don't need the utility.
