We have a X8STE (latest BIOS) and W3550 system. we installed 2048MB (2x1GB DDR3 ECC) memory. When we look in the bios it says that "2040MB is available and 2048MB is populated"??

This is correct because 8MB is reserved for shadow ram puposes.
