We want to use the X9DRH-7F board in an CSE-847E16-R1400LPB.
This chassis got 36 hard drive bays. We installed 25.
During boot up the controller tells me that only 16 drives are supported?

Yes, this is correct. The onboard controllers are entry level, and will only support max 16 drives. Also they are not suitable for expander backplanes. Please use a add-on controller AOC-S2208L-H8iR it will support up to 240 SAS and/or SATA hard drives and SSDs.
