The 10GBASE-T has a cost advantage, but has higher latency and power consumption per port. The copper SFP+ direct-attach cable (DAC) is ideal to run cable lengths up to about 10m. From 10-100m (300ft), RJ-45 is typically much more cost effective than the SFP+ optical fiber alternative . However, over 100m, SFP+ optical fiber is the only choice for very long hauls. Latency is worse on 10GBASE-T because the phy needs to do encode/decode (serialize/deserialize) adding about 2µS delay per port. Overall latency for SFP+ is usually lower than 0.7µS.
