We have an 847E26-RJBOD1 here connected to a single port external LSI controller. There are 9 fan connectors in the system but only 7 actual fans. All of them are connected to the backplanes and they all physically work and move air. The problem is that the small power board, which doesn’t have any fans connected, is reporting missing fan errors via the latest version of LSI utility for Windows. How to solve the issue?
If the complaint only happens "shortly after reboot", then it's "normal", even with the latest firmware.
Upon power up, or MSM starts, it will report "fan removed", "power supply removed", and "fan failed" at very beginning (time shown as "shortly after reboot"). Since those failures are classified as "critical" in default, so MSM automatically sends email out.
Usually within a minute, MSM will report "fan re-inserted" and "power supply re-inserted" messages in its event log, so everything is back to normal. However, these are classified as "information only", so MSM will not actively notify users though they could be found in the event log. We are not sure why this happen, probably it's a bug on MSM or our backplane FW, or perhaps it's because the whole system is not stabilized upon power up, etc. We will work with LSI for details if it is really a concern.
This symptom happens no matter what FW versions we are using, nor even disable the remote_fan jumpers. The only way to get rid of them is using the "no-fan" version of MFG, though I can't remember if this could fix the "power supply removed" message. However, once using the "no-fan" MFG, then there will be no alert even if there is any real fan failure!
Since this happens only upon power up, and usually data center or servers are remaining on 24/7/365, so I guess it is not really "critical."
