Question
The Intel Xeon processor 5500 series requires Registered DIMMs, how can this be supported in X8SAX/C7X58?

Answer
In general, the memory support is related to the motherboard implementation. A particular DP motherboard based on the Intel 5500 chipset (Tylersburg-S) can choose between a UDIMM only, RDIMM only, or a UDIMM/RDIMM design.

The Nehalem-EP processors support 3 DIMM types:

-Registered DIMMs (RDIMM)
-ECC Unbuffered DIMMs (UDIMM ECC)
-Unbuffered DIMMs (UDIMM) – without ECC

X8SAX and C7X58 are based on the Intel X58 Express chipset, and support Un-Buffered (UDIMM) DDR3 memory only. The Intel Xeon processor 5500 series can be used in X8SAX/C7X58 with UDIMMs DDR3 memory.
