Question
I connected a brand-new Broadcom BTR-CVPM05 CacheVault to the AOC-S3916L-H16R MegaRAID controller in my Supermicro server.  After the CacheVault was fully charged, its status became "Failed" shortly after.

Do I need to return  the CacheVault back to Supermicro for a RMA replacement?

Answer
You may not need the RMA replacement!

It's a known issue in MR7.14 firmware release of Broadcom Aero MegaRAID adapters (95xx series), which is also used by Supermicro AOC-S3916 & 3908 RAID controllers.  The CacheVault may be incorrectly marked as BAD by MegaRAID controller during the initial learn cycle.  Broadcom had provided the improvement in later firmware release to address this false alarm.

Below is the workaround without updating the firmware:

1. Wait 2 minutes to allow charging of the CacheVault or the SuperCap pack.

2. Set factory default via HII (inside BIOS under Advanced menu) or StorCLI (command: storcli /cX set factory defaults).

3. Perform an Online Controller reset (command: storcli /cX restart) or a system restart.

4. Manually start the learn cycle (command: storcli /cX/cv start learn).
