Supermicro Computer Inc. has introduced new 5G systems that work in harsh outdoor environments and come in a tower-ready form factor for 5G radio access network (RAN), artificial intelligence (AI) inferencing and other intelligent Edge-focused applications based on Intel Xeon scalable processors.

The new SuperServer option packs a proprietary SuperMicro board in an enclosure that meets the IP65 standard for protection from dust and water incursion. The system has an Intel Xeon server supported by GPUs or FPGA add-ons, and is intended for smart applications such as AI inferencing, carried out at the Edge.

By most accounts, the 5G edge buildout will be an enormous global infrastructure upgrade that will increase processing needs at the edge. Much of that processing will be done in servers deployed in places outside of corporate or cloud datacenters.

Today, Supermicro announced a pole-mounted server. The new IP65 enclosure-based servers are targeting the 5G and other edge-focused markets. Regular readers are probably already familiar with the company from our articles like our recent review of Supermicro’s 6019P server, but I’m still going to provide a little background information on them for new readers.

Hardware manufacturer Supermicro Computing has introduced a cell tower-mounted server enclosure designed to be a "datacenter on a pole" for edge computing needs. The enclosure is IP65 rated and designed to be highly configurable for various edge computing uses.

As data has become one of the world's most-traded currencies, data centers designed to house it have grown too -- along with their carbon footprint. According to recent estimates, data centers account for one percent of total electricity usage worldwide, and analysts have predicted for years that this trend would only continue to worsen as demand for data centers rose. 

AMD has expanded the choices available within its 2nd Gen Epyc processor family. The reason behind the expansion is simply to give customers more performance choices. Both a new 64C/128T part and a new 32C/64T part have been announced. Whichever you choose it will include 256MB of L3 cache, boost as high as 3.3GHz, support up to 128 lanes of PCIe 4.0, support for up to 3,200MHz memory, and offer advanced security features.
